2018 Banners and Flags - What Style are you?

Based on more than a year of experience with our banner system that shows dancer style and achievement, I plan to make the following revisions for banners issues beginning in 2018 (AD).

  1. We offer 'Flag Style' (wide) to better fit your profile pics.  If you rezz them in world you can set them physical to pickup wind effects.
  2. Simplify the number of squares from 18 to 15.
  3. Highlights groups including Format (competition, expo, impromptu), vs Faction (Book, Story, Creative), vs Admin (Teacher, Judge, Chronicler), etc.
  4. Highlight the important connection of Dance Faction to other areas (Impromptu, Book Dance)
  5. Simply things by reducing levels or how much you dance in an area (minor, major, prime) to simply yes or no.  You can always tell people you did 144 expos if they ask.  I have places you can optionally include a couple of numbers - Place points, and total # events which maps to a 'Level'.
Note this system tries to show many ways to enjoy dance.  This includes free, who are just as valuable with the admin work they do.  What would dance be without Ramius holding Relay For Life events?  What would it be without the Omen Valley pictures, or Rosa's events at Gorean Campus?  What about creative rebels, or Guardians and teachers of Book forms, or Snow's courses on Impromptu dancing?  So dance, watch, or lead the community.

Legend for the 2018 Flag

Each area is shown with text.  Dark letters on a light background show you have not done this item.  Reversing that - light letters on dark background for that box shows you have (per the rules below).

The top row has space for a picture of you, then your name, date (yymm), and a few words (your motto or vision).  It ends with a wild card space you can use to shout out to your associated groups.

Examples

A dancer strong in creative styles

A free who both supports and performs

A free who excels at support of dance

An advanced and experienced dancer

Explanation

Boxes on the flag are grouped as follows:
  • Format - Describes how the event is run  - Red
  • Faction - Describes how the dance is designed and performed - Green (or Purple for Dance Faction related)
  • Feat - Other stuff I could not think of a name for - Gold
  • Admin - Things non dancers do - Blue

Things related to Dance Faction use purple to show it's important connection to both book forms and impromptu format.

Formats:

Expo Format - no winners, not judged.  May allow creative forms

Competition - Judged, with some winners.

Creative Format - Koardan's new Korner format (impromptu group)

Impromtu Format - Everything is written on the fly in real time.  We seek to react to the audience and venue, and move the flow with the crowd.  This usually is done with 'dance faction' emotes of what can be seen (how the dancer moves).  But Koardan's Korner format also animated a group on the fly in reaction to the musician (thanks Dwyan Jester (note, check spelling)).

Faction:

Dance Faction - no though emotes.  Convey your message or feeling by describing what the audience could see.  This is the default and premier form of traditional Gorean Dance.  The writings of Master Samos describe this well.  It's analogous to classical music on Earth.

Story Faction - you can type what you want.  This is often used to tell a story with a flow and ending.  If it pleased the free (and maybe the dancer) then it's all art.  Would this be analogous to modern music (vs classical music) on Earth?

Creative Faction - Something with structure that is new, and not in those two formats.  The best example is the use of poetry / verse instead of description of movements (dance faction), or telling a story in prose.  If people enjoy it then it is art.  Just don't confuse this with traditional / classical dance.  Event organizers MUST be clear on which forms they allow.

There are poets in Gor who are famous for reciting.  Add this to animation and you have the creative spark flowing.  Again, no disrespect to my favorite form - classical / traditional Dance Faction Book dances  (explains why I like classical Earth music - though I enjoy all styles).

Feats

Book Dance (grouped with Dance faction purple stuff) - A dance following the patterns and rules from examples in Norman's books - Placatory, Dance of the Six Thongs, Dance of the Newly Collared Slave Girl, etc.

Region - Dance that shows style from one of the regions of gor - Schendi, Tahari, Torvaldsland, etc.

Group  - a group dance with 2 or more people.  This includes Tandem dances (2 performers working in conjunction).

Place - you are one of the winners of a formal competition (1st, 2nd, or 3rd place).  If you are driven type 'A' person, you may total points for your wins - 3 points for 1st, 2 for 2nd, and 1 for third (regardless of ties).   You can put the total of your win points to the right of the word 'place'.

You may also count the number of events (of any type) you participated in.  Koardan can translate this into a 'level' for you (until he adds the table here) (Example, Snow has danced in over 144 events - making her a level 11 performer).

(Critical Note - Don't let wining or pride go to your head and spoil your kajira servant  nature.  See my sleen for questions on this.  The point is to please the free (and enjoy doing so) )

Admin

Judge - you score a competitive event

Staff - You organize, host, sponsor, MC, DJ, build, provide security for, or are a tarn girl (teleport people between dancers).  Example, the sim owner would be a host, even if someone else does much of the organization.

Teach - you design or teach classes on some aspect of dance.  Or, you may conduct one on one mentoring.

Chronicle - You take pictures, video, or write / blog about dance concepts or events.

Rules

Banners and Flags are given by having the applicant fill out a form suggesting their level for each box, followed up by a short interview with any questions followed by creation of appropriate artwork.

Criteria to fill a box is that you have done some - enough to not embarrass yourself when the interviewer asks what you did.  It's nice if you have some artifact from the dance (log, or notecard, or picture), but we only require that you remember enough to list the event (including the location, and hopefully date).

The dancer and reviewer should agree before the badge is official.  We may chose the design of the banners each year.

Notes on Style

I created these in a Google Doc Spreadsheet using the Trade Winds font.  The font you use can be artsy, but should be readable.   Contact Koardan if you would like to display your progress as a vertical banner instead of horizontal flag.

You can think of each box in the flag or banner as a 'badge' that can be earned.

Fine print

Can this system of badges, banners, and flags be used for stuff besides dance?  Yes! of course.  In fact the city of Teehra is using it for Kajira training (a fancier more visually descriptive form of a certificate).

If you find yourself in a context where citing the author of the work would be appropriate (to avoid plagarism) you can cite creative commons -  CC BY M. Koardan, ndp.  This means you can use it and change it and charge or not.  Just give me credit when due.  Thank you.   "ndp" means 'pen name' (sounds cooler in French - nom de plume).  M stands for Master.
